Hard water and stone worktops in Milton Keynes

Tap water in Milton Keynes is hard, so limescale is part of daily life around sinks and taps. That affects which worktop is easiest to live with and how you should clean it. This guide covers what to expect from each stone and the cleaning mistakes that damage worktops in hard-water areas.

How hard is the water?

Anglian Water supplies Milton Keynes. It describes the water across its region as hard to very hard, because rainwater picks up calcium carbonate as it passes through chalk and limestone. For the MK1 postcode, its 2025 data shows a supply-zone average of at least 287 mg/l, above the 250 mg/l it classes as hard. Your own figure depends on your supply zone; Anglian Water has a postcode checker on its website.

What limescale does to worktops

Hard water leaves white spots and crusty deposits where it dries, mostly round the tap, on the drainer and at the back of the sink. Limescale does not harm quartz, granite or porcelain itself. The damage usually comes from the products used to remove it: most limescale removers are acidic.

Stone by stone

  • Quartz: easy. Wipe with warm water and a mild washing-up liquid. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals, and follow the manufacturer’s care guide before using any descaler.
  • Porcelain: the most tolerant. It resists most household cleaners, so limescale is simple to remove.
  • Granite: fine with pH-neutral cleaners. Repeated acidic descaling can wear away the sealer, so reseal if water starts to darken the stone.
  • Marble and limestone: the most sensitive. Acidic descalers, vinegar and lemon etch the surface. Lift scale with warm water and a soft cloth, then dry around the tap.

Design choices that help

An undermount sink lets you wipe water straight into the bowl instead of leaving a rim where scale collects. Drainer grooves cut into the stone should slope towards the sink so water runs off rather than drying in the grooves. A full-height stone splashback behind the sink removes grout lines, which are the hardest place to keep free of scale.

Water softeners

A water softener reduces limescale everywhere. Anglian Water notes that some softeners raise the sodium level in the water, so softened water should not be used for drinking or cooking; most installations keep a separate unsoftened tap in the kitchen for that.

Common questions

Which worktop is best for hard water?

Porcelain and quartz are the easiest. Both shrug off limescale and clean with mild products. Marble needs the most care.

Can I use vinegar on my worktop?

Not on marble, limestone or a sealed natural stone you are unsure about. On porcelain it is generally fine; on quartz, check the manufacturer’s guidance.
