Kitchen island worktops in Milton Keynes
We make and fit stone tops for kitchen islands in Milton Keynes, from a simple prep island to a large one with a hob, sink, seating and waterfall ends. An island top is usually the largest piece of stone in the room, so we plan its size, joins, overhangs and the route into the house before anything is cut.
- Seating overhangs planned with support
- Waterfall ends
- Hob and sink cut-outs
Island size and joins
Stone slabs come in set sizes, and a large island can be longer or deeper than one slab. When that happens we place the join where it is hardest to spot, often in line with a hob or sink, and match the pattern either side. If you want a single piece with no join, mention it at the start, since it narrows the materials and slab sizes we can use.
Seating overhangs
A breakfast bar overhang needs enough depth for knees and enough support underneath that the stone is never overloaded. How far stone can safely overhang varies with the stone and how thick it is, and anything beyond that is supported with hidden steel or legs. We specify this for your island rather than guessing, so the overhang is comfortable and safe to lean on.
Waterfall ends
A waterfall end takes the worktop down to the floor in the same stone, so the island reads as one solid block. The top and the side are joined with a mitre at the corner, and the pattern can be matched round it on veined stones. Waterfall ends also protect the side of the island from kicks and bags.
Getting a big piece into the house
A one-piece island top can be heavy and long. Before we cut, we check the route from the van to the kitchen: doorways, tight turns, steps and how far it has to be carried. Many homes in Milton Keynes have straightforward access, but town houses, flats and older cottages may need the top made in two pieces.
Common questions
Can I have a hob on my island?
Yes. The hob cut-out is made to the manufacturer’s measurements, and we need to know your extraction plan, since a downdraft extractor needs its own cut-out.
Can the island top differ from the rest?
Yes, and plenty of people do it: marble or a darker granite on the island turns it into a feature.
Can sockets go in the island top?
Pop-up sockets can be set into the stone. The cut-out is made by us; the wiring must be done by an electrician.
