Porcelain worktops in Milton Keynes
We cut and fit porcelain worktops, including sintered surfaces, for Milton Keynes homeowners who want a thin, modern profile and a surface that copes with heat and sunlight. Porcelain is our usual suggestion for conservatory kitchens, outdoor cooking areas and anyone who wants a bold marble or concrete look without marble’s upkeep.
- Takes hot pans and sunlight
- Slim 12 mm profiles
- Very low porosity
What porcelain worktops are
Porcelain slabs start as fine clay and mineral powders, compacted under great pressure and fired at very high temperature. The result is dense, hard and almost completely non-porous. Sintered surfaces are produced much the same way and fitted identically. Because there is no resin, porcelain is not marked by hot pans and does not fade in sunlight, which is where it beats quartz.
Thin slabs and how edges are finished
Porcelain is often fitted at 12 mm, which gives a sharp, minimal edge. If you prefer a chunkier look, the front edge can be mitred so the top appears 30 mm or more. On many porcelain slabs the pattern is printed on the surface rather than running right through, so a straight cut edge can look different from the face. A mitred edge hides this, and it is one of the things we talk through when you choose a slab.
Strengths and the one weak spot
Porcelain resists heat, stains, UV and most household chemicals, so it is very easy to live with. Its weak spot is the edge: a heavy pan knocked against a sharp corner can chip it more readily than granite. Slightly eased edges and a little care around the sink and hob are enough for most kitchens.
Good places for porcelain
Garden rooms and kitchens with big glazed doors, outdoor kitchens, and splashbacks behind a gas hob are all good uses. Porcelain also works for full-height splashbacks matching the worktop, because large thin panels are lighter to fix to a wall than stone of the same size. See splashbacks and upstands.
Common questions
Is porcelain stronger than quartz?
It is harder and copes better with heat and sunlight. Quartz is more forgiving at the edges, where porcelain can chip if knocked hard.
Can porcelain be used outside?
Yes. It does not fade in UV and copes with frost better than most worktop materials, so it suits outdoor kitchens.
Does porcelain need sealing?
No. It is almost non-porous. Clean it with warm water and a mild detergent.
